Company History
Founded 2016 in San Francisco, California, United States
In 2009, while studying computer science at Princess Sumaya University for Technology in Amman, Jordan, Amjad Masad was struck by a frustrating paradox: despite the browser becoming the universal window to the internet, programming remained chained to local desktop operating systems. Masad spent hundreds of hours in an Amman internet cafe writing JavaScript engines, creating JSREPL—one of the world's first browser-based read-eval-print loops, which was later adopted by Codecademy. Moving to the United States, Masad worked at Yahoo! and joined Facebook's infrastructure team, where he built developer tools and helped open-source React Native. Yet his dream of making programming universally accessible never wavered. In 2016, Masad resigned from Facebook, teaming up with designer Haya Odeh and his brother Faris Masad to found Replit. Accepted into Y Combinator's Winter 2018 batch, they lived on ramen noodles in a small apartment, rewriting Linux container runtimes to allow safe, multi-tenant code execution in the cloud.
The early days of Replit following Y Combinator W18 were defined by radical determination and financial discipline. Living and working out of a small San Francisco apartment, Amjad Masad and Haya Odeh worked twenty-hour days, answering customer support tickets by hand and debugging Linux kernel crashes late into the night. When early servers buckled under viral traffic, Masad manually restarted container daemons while coding new load balancers. That relentless immigrant founder grit became the cultural foundation that propelled Replit into a billion-dollar global phenomenon.
Amjad Masad is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Replit. An inspiring technologist, author, and thought leader, Masad is widely celebrated for his mission to bring the next billion software creators online. Under Masad's leadership, Replit grew from a two-person startup into a $1.16 billion Silicon Valley unicorn. Masad pioneered the concept of cloud-native development environments, championed the creation of Replit Agent, and remains an influential public advocate for technological abundance, individual empowerment, and immigrant founder grit.
Haya Odeh is the co-founder and Vice President of Design at Replit. An exceptional product designer, Odeh conceived Replit's minimalist, playful, and approachable user interface, transforming an intimidating code editor into an inviting creative studio. At Replit, Odeh oversees product design, brand identity, and community experience, ensuring that Replit remains effortlessly accessible to absolute beginners and seasoned software architects alike.
Faris Masad is a co-founder and core engineering leader at Replit. A brilliant frontend and systems engineer, Faris built the interactive terminal emulators, code editor bindings, and real-time collaboration engines that allow millions of developers to write code synchronously inside the browser.
