Company History
Founded 2018 in New York City, New York, United States
In 2016, Cristóbal Valenzuela moved from Santiago, Chile, to New York City to attend the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, where he met fellow Chilean designer Alejandro Matamala and Greek computer scientist Anastasis Germanidis. Frustrated by the enormous friction between academic machine learning research and artistic creation—where using deep learning required navigating complex Linux environments, compiling arcane CUDA drivers, and writing thousands of lines of Python code—the trio began collaborating on tools to bridge the divide. In late 2018, operating out of NYU's incubator space, they officially incorporated Runway. Their early software allowed artists to run generative adversarial networks (GANs) with a few clicks. Recognizing early that diffusion models would supersede GANs in visual fidelity, Runway invested aggressively in fundamental computer vision research, setting the stage for the generative video revolution.
The early days of Runway at NYU ITP were characterized by intense creative experimentation and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Operating in a vibrant environment surrounded by kinetic sculptors, sound designers, and avant-garde programmers, the co-founders developed an enduring appreciation for the diverse ways artists interact with technology. This foundational artistic DNA continues to shape every product decision, interface design, and research initiative at Runway today.
Cristóbal Valenzuela is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Runway. A passionate advocate for the democratization of creative technology, Valenzuela recognized early that artificial intelligence would fundamentally reshape cinema, animation, and visual storytelling. Under Valenzuela's leadership, Runway pioneered the generative video sector, co-authored the research paper on Latent Diffusion Models, secured over $237 million in funding from Google and NVIDIA, and negotiated groundbreaking studio partnerships with Lionsgate, cementing Runway's position as the creative industry's preeminent AI platform.
Alejandro Matamala is the co-founder and Chief Design Officer of Runway. A master of human-computer interaction, Matamala designed Runway's intuitive web-based interface, translating complex deep learning parameters into intuitive creative workflows like Motion Brush, Camera Control, and multi-track timelines. At Runway, Matamala oversees product design, brand identity, and user experience, ensuring that Runway remains effortlessly accessible to painters, animators, and Hollywood directors alike.
Anastasis Germanidis is the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Runway. A world-class software engineer and machine learning researcher, Germanidis co-authored the foundational Latent Diffusion Model paper and architected Runway's cloud-based distributed inference infrastructure. At Runway, Germanidis leads research and engineering across neural video synthesis, distributed model training, and API scalability, overseeing the teams that brought Gen-1, Gen-2, and Gen-3 Alpha to global commercial deployment.
