Company History
Founded 2020 in Singapore & San Francisco, California (Remote-First)
In 2019, Paul Copplestone was living in Singapore, having previously founded and scaled several startups across Southeast Asia, while Ant Wilson was building developer tools in New Zealand. Both engineers were passionate about open-source software and frustrated by the limitations of Firebase. They noticed that every time a development team outgrew Firebase, they spent months painfully rewriting their backend in PostgreSQL. Copplestone and Wilson began collaborating on an open-source real-time engine for PostgreSQL written in Elixir, allowing developers to listen to database mutations over WebSockets. In late 2019, they incorporated Supabase and applied to Y Combinator, being accepted into the W20 batch. When they launched their initial GitHub repository with the slogan 'The Open Source Firebase Alternative,' the project went viral, accumulating thousands of GitHub stars within days. Realizing they had struck a generational nerve, they expanded the platform to include automatic REST APIs, authentication, file storage, and serverless edge functions, igniting a global open-source movement.
Paul Copplestone is an engineer, open-source technologist, and entrepreneur who serves as the co-founder and CEO of Supabase. Born in New Zealand and having lived extensively across Southeast Asia, Copplestone previously founded and served as CTO of multiple software companies, including ServisHero and Nimbus for Work. Frustrated by the proprietary scaling limitations of Google Firebase while building cloud platforms in Asia, Copplestone partnered with Ant Wilson to create an open-source alternative built on PostgreSQL. At Supabase, Copplestone leads corporate strategy, open-source community engagement, and commercial enterprise expansion, establishing Supabase as a $1.5 billion cloud infrastructure leader.
Ant Wilson is an engineer, developer tooling architect, and serial entrepreneur who co-founded Supabase in 2020. A native of New Zealand, Wilson previously built developer tools and collaborative software applications, developing deep expertise in real-time distributed systems and database replication. Partnering with Paul Copplestone, Wilson engineered the initial prototype of Supabase's real-time PostgreSQL synchronization engine using Elixir. As CTO, Wilson directs Supabase's core engineering architecture, cloud infrastructure, and security posture, overseeing the integration of PostgreSQL, PostgREST, authentication services, and edge computing runtimes.
Since its establishment in 2020, Supabase expanded from an early-stage venture into a recognized leader in Cloud Database, Backend-as-a-Service (BaaS), Developer Tools, Open Source Software, PostgreSQL & AI Infrastructure, overcoming key market challenges.
Over its history, Supabase executed decisive strategic pivots toward scalable monetization and digital distribution, securing its current market leadership.
By continually modernizing operations and embracing workflow automation, Supabase maintains resilience through changing technological and economic cycles.
