Founding Story
In 1948 Colin Chapman, an engineering student in London, bought a 1930 Austin Seven and rebuilt it in a lock-up garage behind his girlfriend's parents' house. He had little money but a clear idea: where rivals such as Ferrari built large, heavy engines, a very light car with a small engine could be just as quick. That focus on lightness became the founding principle of Lotus and brought it early racing success.

Colin Chapman founded Lotus Cars in 1952. As a brilliant, highly innovative structural engineer, he obsessively believed that reducing weight was infinitely more important than simply adding horsepower (famously stating, 'Simplify, then add lightness'). This philosophy allowed Lotus to completely dominate Formula 1 racing and produce legendary, featherweight street cars. Colin Chapman was born in 1928 in London. Education: University College London; Stationers' Company's School. Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman was born on May 19, 1928 and died on December 16, 1982. He founded Lotus in 1952 and at first ran it in his spare time with a group of enthusiasts. He applied aeronautical engineering techniques to car design.
Hazel Chapman
Hazel Chapman co-founded Lotus Cars alongside her husband Colin. She provided the initial £25 capital required to start the company and was the absolute driving force behind the business operations, managing the company's complex finances and racing contracts while Colin focused entirely on engineering.
