Kia possesses a gritty, foundational founding story, rooted in the desperate industrial infancy of Korea, long before it became an automotive titan, starting entirely with the pragmatic, meticulous manufacturing of bicycle parts. The company was founded in 1944 in Kyungsung (now Seoul) as Kyungsung Precision Industry by Kim Chul-ho. At the time Korea was heavily occupied by Japan, and the overarching industrial focus was simply producing basic, utilitarian components. Kim Chul-ho was a skilled, tenacious engineer who recognized a fundamental need: affordable, durable transportation for a heavily impoverished population. His foundational masterstroke was not building cars; it was building steel tubing and precise bicycle parts. In 1951, they achieved a historic milestone: they produced the 'Samcholli-ho,' Korea's very first domestically manufactured bicycle. In 1952, reflecting their ambition to expand beyond Korea, they changed the name to Kia Industries (with 'Ki' meaning 'to arise' and 'a' representing 'Asia', essentially translating to 'Rising out of Asia'). Under Kim's pragmatic leadership, Kia expanded up the value chain. They began building durable Honda-licensed motorcycles in 1957, and eventually robust, utilitarian Mazda-licensed trucks in 1962. It wasn't until 1974 that Kia finally produced its very first passenger car (the Brisa).
