How did Dollarama start?
Founded in 1992 by third-generation retailer Larry Rossy in Matane, Quebec, Dollarama transformed a small family variety store chain into Canada's greatest retail growth story.

Founding Story

The roots of Dollarama stretch back to 1910 when Salim Rossy, a Lebanese immigrant, opened an 800-square-foot dry goods store on rue Saint-Laurent in Montreal. The business expanded as a family variety store chain under Salim's son George Rossy, who established Rossy Inc. In 1973, Larry Rossy took over the 20-store Rossy chain following his father's sudden death, growing the regional variety store network to 44 locations over the next two decades. In April 1992, observing the severe Canadian economic recession and the emerging success of dollar stores in the United States, Larry Rossy converted an underperforming Rossy store in the small coastal town of Matane, Quebec, into a new retail format called 'Dollarama'—where every single item in the store was sold for the exact fixed price of $1.00. The concept was an immediate commercial triumph: sales exploded, and Rossy rapidly converted the entire 44-store chain to Dollarama. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Dollarama expanded across Canada. In 2004, Bain Capital acquired an 80% stake for CAD $1.05 billion, retaining Larry Rossy to lead expansion. Dollarama went public on the Toronto Stock Exchange in 2009. In 2009, Dollarama made the strategic decision to break the single $1.00 ceiling, introducing $1.25, $1.50, and $2.00 price points, which allowed the retailer to dramatically broaden its product offering to include brand-name goods while maintaining uncompromised value. In the decades following its initial founding, Dollarama navigated rapid industry evolutions, transitioning from early legacy operating paradigms to modern integrated operations. This sustained focus allowed the company to survive cyclical macroeconomic contractions, outpace regional incumbents, and establish deep institutional trust with demanding stakeholders. Through disciplined capital allocation, continuous internal innovation, and targeted strategic initiatives, Dollarama built an enduring competitive moat anchored by proprietary technology, deep domain expertise, and sticky relationships that resist structural disruption.
