Charter Communications, operating as Spectrum, is the largest U.S. cable operator by customers after its 2026 merger with Cox Communications. It grew mainly through acquisitions: Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks in 2016, then Cox in 2026. Its core business is home and business broadband, with mobile, video, voice, and advertising built around it. As of June 30, 2026, before Cox was added, Charter had 31.5 million customer relationships, 29.4 million internet customers, 12.5 million video customers, and 12.5 million mobile lines. The company is headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut. The massive American telecommunications giant was founded in St. Louis, Missouri in 1993, aggressively rolling up hundreds of fragmented regional cable providers to become a near-monopoly in US broadband internet under the Spectrum brand.

Winfrey became President and CEO on December 1, 2022. He joined Charter as CFO in 2010 and later served as COO. As CEO, he has pushed the Spectrum Mobile bundle, the network upgrade to symmetrical multi-gigabit speeds, the 2023 Disney carriage deal that put streaming apps inside Spectrum TV packages, and the Cox Communications merger, which closed in August 2026. Before Charter, he held finance roles at European cable companies including Unitymedia and NTL. He holds accounting and MBA degrees from the University of Florida.

Rutledge was CEO from 2012 to December 2022 and executive chairman until 2023. He led the 2016 acquisitions of Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks, which made Charter the second-largest U.S. cable operator, and moved the company onto the single Spectrum brand. Before Charter, he was COO of Cablevision.
Charter's main problem is broadband customer losses. It lost 172,000 internet customers in Q2 2026, more than the 116,000 it lost in Q2 2025, as AT&T Fiber, Frontier (now part of Verizon), and other fiber builders spread into its markets and T-Mobile and Verizon sell 5G fixed wireless home internet. Linear video is still shrinking, and political advertising swings revenue from year to year. The Cox deal also adds integration work and about $12 billion of Cox debt and finance leases, on top of an already leveraged balance sheet.
