Company History
Founded 2021 in San Francisco, California, United States
Anthropic was founded in early 2021 by a group of senior researchers who departed OpenAI, led by former Vice President of Research Dario Amodei and former Vice President of Safety and Policy Daniela Amodei. The core founding team—which included Jack Clark, Sam McCandlish, Jared Kaplan, and Tom Brown—held deep concerns regarding the commercial redirection of OpenAI following its multi-billion-dollar Microsoft partnership, fearing that safety governance and transparency were being subordinate to rapid consumer deployment. Determined to build an organization where safety and capabilities research were mathematically intertwined, the founders incorporated Anthropic as a Delaware Public Benefit Corporation and designed a governance structure with a Long-Term Benefit Trust. In 2022, Anthropic published its seminal research paper on 'Constitutional AI,' introducing a methodology where AI models critique and align their own behavior using a codified constitution of principles rather than relying solely on human feedback. This breakthrough enabled the launch of Claude in 2023, followed by the Claude 3 and 3.5 model families in 2024, establishing Anthropic as the premier technological rival to OpenAI.
Dario Amodei is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Anthropic PBC. Widely regarded as one of the preeminent minds in modern artificial intelligence, Amodei previously served as the Vice President of Research at OpenAI. At OpenAI, he directed the core teams responsible for developing GPT-2 and GPT-3, as well as pioneering foundational research into AI scaling laws and reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF). Driven by deep-seated convictions regarding the necessity of mathematical alignment and verifiable safety standards in frontier models, Amodei departed OpenAI in late 2020 alongside senior research colleagues to establish Anthropic as a Public Benefit Corporation. Under his leadership as CEO, Anthropic has raised more than $12 billion in institutional capital, secured anchor cloud infrastructure partnerships with Amazon and Google, and developed the Claude family of foundation models. Amodei is an active voice in international AI governance, having testified before the United States Senate Judiciary Committee and consulted with heads of state on frontier AI risk mitigation.
Daniela Amodei is the co-founder and President of Anthropic PBC. Prior to co-founding Anthropic, she served as the Vice President of Safety and Policy at OpenAI, where she oversaw governance, safety research operations, policy implementation, and organizational scaling during OpenAI's hyper-growth transition. She previously held executive people and operations leadership roles at Stripe. At Anthropic, Daniela Amodei oversees global corporate operations, enterprise go-to-market strategy, institutional investor relations, government affairs, and public benefit compliance. Her strategic direction has been instrumental in engineering Anthropic's dual-cloud alliance with Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud, scaling the global workforce to over 1,500 personnel while preserving Anthropic's research-first culture and Public Benefit Corporation charter.
Jack Clark is the co-founder and Head of Policy at Anthropic PBC. He previously served as the Policy Director at OpenAI, where he built the company's public policy, government affairs, and regulatory research teams. Clark is the author of 'Import AI', one of the world's most widely read and influential weekly AI newsletters, read by tens of thousands of policymakers, defense analysts, and researchers globally. At Anthropic, Clark spearheads global regulatory engagement, international treaty discussions, and evaluations with the US and UK AI Safety Institutes. He also serves as the co-chair of the AI Index at Stanford University and advises international bodies on compute governance, frontier risk thresholds, and AI capability measurement.
Sam McCandlish is a co-founder and senior research scientist at Anthropic. At OpenAI, McCandlish was a key research lead investigating the empirical scaling laws of neural networks, co-authoring the foundational 2020 paper 'Scaling Laws for Neural Language Models' alongside Jared Kaplan and Dario Amodei. At Anthropic, McCandlish leads research into model architecture, compute optimization, and empirical scaling, ensuring that each generation of Claude maximizes performance across parameter count, compute budgets, and token throughput.
Jared Kaplan is a co-founder and Chief Science Officer at Anthropic. A pioneer in theoretical high-energy physics and string theory, Kaplan transitioned into artificial intelligence research, where he established the mathematical foundation of neural scaling laws. At Anthropic, Kaplan directs frontier capabilities research, guiding the mathematical formulation of scaling laws, multimodal reasoning, and long-context attention mechanisms that enabled Claude's 200,000-token context window.
Tom Brown is a co-founder and principal research engineer at Anthropic. Brown was the lead author of the seminal 2020 paper 'Language Models are Few-Shot Learners', which introduced GPT-3 to the world and catalyzed the generative AI revolution. At Anthropic, Brown leads large-scale distributed training infrastructure, architecting the fault-tolerant software pipelines that coordinate distributed clusters of tens of thousands of GPUs and custom accelerators across AWS and Google Cloud.
