Company History
Founded 2016 in San Francisco, California, United States
Scale AI was founded in 2016 by Alexandr Wang and Lucy Guo. Wang, the child of nuclear physicists at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, grew up immersed in advanced mathematics and computer science. After placing top-ranked in national physics and coding competitions, Wang enrolled at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at age 17. During his freshman year, Wang observed that while deep learning algorithms and GPU computing were advancing rapidly, the greatest bottleneck preventing artificial intelligence from solving real-world problems was the lack of clean, annotated training data. Deciding to drop out of MIT after his freshman year, Wang partnered with Lucy Guo (a former product designer at Quora and Snapchat) to join Y Combinator's Summer 2016 batch. They launched Scale as a simple API for human-in-the-loop data labeling—originally offering 'one line of code to get human intelligence.' Scale initially captured the explosive autonomous vehicle sector before strategically pivoting to generative foundation models in 2020, becoming the definitive data backbone of the modern AI revolution. In the summer of 2016, working out of a cramped apartment in San Francisco, Alexandr Wang and Lucy Guo built the initial prototypes of Scale AI with relentless urgency. Wang, drawing upon his mathematical background from Los Alamos and MIT, wrote the core backend algorithms that routed annotation tasks across global worker pools, while Guo crafted intuitive, pixel-perfect user interfaces that minimized annotator cognitive load. Within sixty days of launch, autonomous driving researchers across Silicon Valley were routing production data through Scale's API, validating the founders' core conviction that high-quality human data was the true fuel of the machine learning revolution.
Alexandr Wang is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Scale AI, Inc. After working as a software engineer at Addepar and Quora, Wang dropped out of MIT at age 19 to participate in Y Combinator (Summer 2016), founding Scale AI to solve the fundamental data bottleneck crippling machine learning. Under Wang's visionary leadership, Scale AI scaled into a $13.8 billion global enterprise generating over $750 million in annual revenue, making Wang the world's youngest self-made billionaire at age 25. Wang has positioned Scale AI at the center of the global AI supply chain, championing American AI leadership, testifying before the US Congress, and partnering with virtually every major frontier AI lab and military command in the Western world.
Lucy Guo is the co-founder of Scale AI. An exceptionally talented designer and engineer, Guo teamed up with Alexandr Wang in 2016 to establish Scale AI, playing a pivotal role in designing the original data annotation UI, developer onboarding workflows, and human-in-the-loop task routing systems. After guiding Scale AI through its foundational growth phase, Guo stepped back from operational leadership in 2018 to pursue venture investing, subsequently founding early-stage venture capital firm Backend Capital and creator tech platform Passes. She remains celebrated as one of the most successful female entrepreneurs and investors in technology.
