In 2015, Filip Kaliszan, Benjamin Bercovitz, and James Ren were running CourseRank, an educational technology startup they had founded while studying computer science at Stanford University, which was successfully acquired by Chegg. Searching for their next venture, they reconnected with Hans Robertson, who had co-founded cloud networking pioneer Meraki and sold it to Cisco Systems for $1.2 billion in 2012. Robertson observed that while enterprise networking had successfully transitioned to cloud management via Meraki, physical security remained an absolute nightmare: Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) were forced to manage insecure, offline camera servers that were notorious vulnerabilities for corporate cyberattacks. In 2016, the four founders incorporated Verkada in San Mateo, California. Rather than manufacturing standard IP cameras, they designed an entirely new computing architecture: a hybrid-cloud camera that processed computer vision algorithms locally and stored video on encrypted on-board SSDs, streaming only encrypted metadata to a centralized web application. When Verkada launched its Command platform in 2017, enterprise demand exploded, attracting venture capital from First Round Capital and Lightspeed and initiating a multi-billion-dollar enterprise security transformation.
Filip Kaliszan is a Polish-American computer scientist, technology entrepreneur, and executive who co-founded Verkada in 2016 and serves as its CEO. Born in Poland, Kaliszan moved to the United States and earned a bachelor's and master's degree in computer science from Stanford University. While at Stanford, Kaliszan co-founded CourseRank, a pioneering course evaluation platform that expanded to hundreds of universities before being acquired by Chegg. Following Chegg, Kaliszan partnered with Hans Robertson, Benjamin Bercovitz, and James Ren to establish Verkada. Under his leadership, Verkada transformed from an early hybrid-cloud camera prototype into a $3.2 billion enterprise security titan serving over 20,000 corporate and institutional customers.
Hans Robertson is an American technology entrepreneur, investor, and business executive who co-founded Verkada in 2016. Robertson previously co-founded cloud networking pioneer Meraki in 2006, serving as Chief Operating Officer and guiding the company through explosive commercial growth until its acquisition by Cisco Systems for $1.2 billion in 2012. Recognizing that physical security remained encumbered by archaic on-premise hardware, Robertson partnered with Filip Kaliszan to bring Meraki's cloud-managed operating model to physical enterprise security, providing crucial commercial strategy and board guidance.
Benjamin Bercovitz is an American software engineer, systems architect, and entrepreneur who co-founded Verkada in 2016. Bercovitz earned a degree in computer science from Stanford University and co-founded CourseRank alongside Filip Kaliszan and James Ren. At Verkada, Bercovitz led the software architecture of the Verkada Command cloud platform, designing the distributed cloud backend, real-time WebSocket communication layer, and multi-tenant video streaming protocols.
James Ren is an American computer systems engineer and technology executive who co-founded Verkada in 2016, serving as Chief Technology Officer. Ren holds a degree in computer science from Stanford University and co-founded CourseRank. At Verkada, Ren has led embedded systems engineering, designing the custom Linux-based camera firmware, on-device solid-state storage drivers, local video encryption, and the edge computer vision inference pipelines.
