In 2015, Guy Podjarny had just departed Akamai Technologies, where he had served as Chief Technology Officer after Akamai acquired his web performance startup Blaze for $80 million. Looking at the evolving software landscape, Podjarny observed a profound structural shift: modern applications were no longer built from scratch; 80% to 90% of modern codebase consisted of third-party open-source libraries and modules. When developers built a simple web application using Node.js or Python, they pulled in hundreds of transitive dependencies, inheriting thousands of unknown security vulnerabilities. Recognizing that legacy security scanners were despised by developers because they generated dense PDF reports without actionable solutions, Podjarny joined forces with former Unit 8200 cyber intelligence colleagues Assaf Hefetz and Danny Grander. Incorporating Snyk in London and Tel Aviv, they built a tool that did not merely point out vulnerabilities, but automatically generated minimal-impact patch pull requests that upgraded dependencies without breaking backwards compatibility, establishing the developer-first security category.
The early days of Snyk in late 2015 and 2016 were defined by intense grassroots community evangelism. Guy Podjarny and his co-founders traveled to developer meetups and open-source conferences across Europe and North America, buying pizza for developers and demonstrating how easy it was to exploit transitive dependencies in popular npm packages. Guy Podjarny is the co-founder and President of Snyk.
