In 2018, Avery Pennarun had recently left Google, where he had led hardware and software networking for Google Fiber, while David Crawshaw and Brad Fitzpatrick were core technical leads on Google's Go programming language team. Frequently discussing the agonizing complexity of corporate networking, they realized that despite trillions of dollars invested in cloud computing, connecting two computers securely remained an absolute nightmare: developers spent hours wrestling with OpenVPN certificates, configuring IPSec gateways, and fighting corporate firewall administrators. When Jason Donenfeld released the WireGuard protocol—a radically simpler, blazingly fast cryptographic tunnel consisting of just 4,000 lines of code—the founders recognized a generational opportunity. WireGuard was technically brilliant, but it lacked an automated control plane: users had to manually configure cryptographic keys and IP addresses on every single machine. The founders incorporated Tailscale in early 2019, writing a centralized coordination server in Go that automated key exchange, NAT traversal, and identity mapping, delivering the world's first true zero-config mesh network.
The earliest prototypes of Tailscale were coded by Avery Pennarun, David Crawshaw, and Brad Fitzpatrick in early 2019. Working across Toronto, New York, and San Francisco, the founders spent months refining their Go-based WireGuard userspace implementation and testing NAT traversal across every bizarre combination of cellular hotspots, hotel Wi-Fi gateways, and residential fiber routers they could find. When their first live test connected a laptop in Toronto directly to a server in Australia in under two seconds with zero port forwarding, they knew they had changed networking forever.
