The inception of Teespring was sparked by a student protest at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, in 2011. A beloved local college dive bar called 'Fish Co.' was abruptly forced to shut down by local authorities. Undergraduates Walker Williams and Evan Stites-Clayton wanted to print memorial t-shirts saying 'Free Fish Co.' to rally the student body and raise money for the bar staff. However, when they contacted local screen printers, they were told they had to pay hundreds of dollars upfront and order a minimum of 500 shirts, risking severe financial loss if the shirts didn't sell. Frustrated by this barrier, the duo spent a weekend coding a simple website that allowed students to pre-order the shirts; if the campaign reached a threshold of 200 orders, the shirts would be printed and shipped, otherwise credit cards wouldn't be charged. Within days, they sold thousands of shirts, netting several thousand dollars. Realizing that everyone with an idea or audience faced the exact same problem, Williams and Stites-Clayton launched Teespring to make physical merchandising as frictionless as publishing a blog post.
