Company History
Founded 2003 in New York, New York, United States
Squarespace was born in the autumn of 2003 inside a dorm room at the University of Maryland, College Park. Anthony Casalena, then a 21-year-old computer science student, wanted to build a personal website to showcase his work and write blog posts. However, when he surveyed the available software tools of the era—such as Blogger, Movable Type, and raw HTML editors—he was appalled by their clunky user interfaces, lack of visual elegance, and requirement to piece together separate hosting servers, page builders, and database software. Determined to build a better solution, Casalena borrowed $30,000 from his father to purchase high-speed server hardware, set up a server rack in his bedroom, and wrote the initial Java and HTML codebase entirely by himself. He launched Squarespace 1.0 in January 2004, initially marketing the software to friends and tech bloggers. Working 18-hour days as sole programmer, system administrator, designer, and customer support agent, Casalena bootstrapped Squarespace to $1 million in annual revenue by 2006, establishing the foundation for a multi-billion-dollar global design icon.
Anthony Casalena is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Squarespace, Inc. Over two decades of continuous leadership, Casalena guided Squarespace from a solo bedroom project into a $7.2 billion global software titan generating over $1.2 billion in annual recurring revenue. Casalena's relentless focus on aesthetic craftsmanship, design typography, and disciplined capital management established Squarespace as one of the most resilient and profitable SaaS businesses in modern history. He guided the company through seven years of solo bootstrapping, institutional venture funding from Accel and General Atlantic, a 2021 NYSE direct listing, and its landmark $7.2 billion acquisition by Permira in 2024. Casalena is celebrated as one of the most disciplined tech founders of his generation, retaining significant equity ownership and operational leadership throughout Squarespace's evolution into a global design icon.
