Vaclav Laurin
Background
Vaclav Laurin was a Czech mechanical engineer, metalworker, and bicycle mechanic born in Kameni in 1865. He trained in locksmithing and steam engineering before co-founding Laurin & Klement.
Role at Skoda Auto a.s.
Vaclav Laurin was the engineering genius behind the founding of Skoda Auto. Partnering with Vaclav Klement in 1895, Laurin designed early Slavia bicycles and designed the company's first motorized bicycle engine in 1899 by mounting an internal combustion engine directly to the front fork, later perfecting the centrally positioned engine design. Laurin engineered the historic Voiturette Type A in 1905, establishing high manufacturing standards that set the benchmark for Central European automotive production.
