Company History
Founded 2011 in Mountain View, California, United States
Redis was born out of desperate necessity in 2009 in Sicily, Italy. Italian software engineer Salvatore Sanfilippo (known online as antirez) was attempting to build a real-time web log analyzer called LLOOGG. Traditional relational SQL databases like MySQL could not handle the rapid write throughput required to track page views across thousands of concurrent websites without locking up. Realizing that disk I/O was the fundamental bottleneck of modern software, Sanfilippo wrote a prototype C program that stored data structures directly in computer RAM and persisted changes asynchronously to disk. He open-sourced the project under the name Redis ('Remote Dictionary Server') on GitHub in March 2009. The project spread like wildfire across the global developer community. In 2011, Israeli cloud infrastructure entrepreneurs Ofer Bengal and Yiftach Shoolman recognized that managing Redis at scale was a massive commercial opportunity, founding Garantia Data (later Redis Labs). In 2015, Redis Labs hired Sanfilippo as lead open-source maintainer and eventually acquired the full rights to the Redis trademark, scaling the technology into a multi-billion-dollar enterprise titan.
Salvatore Sanfilippo is the creator and original architectural author of open-source Redis. Rejecting complex relational models, Sanfilippo designed Redis to store rich data structures directly in memory, pioneering sub-millisecond execution speeds. He led open-source development of Redis for over a decade with funding from VMware, Pivotal, and Redis Labs before stepping down as maintainer in June 2020.
Ofer Bengal is the co-founder and Chairman of Redis, Inc., having served as its founding Chief Executive Officer from 2011 to 2023. Bengal commercialized Redis into an enterprise powerhouse, securing major venture rounds, establishing headquarters in Mountain View, and steering the company from early bootstrapping to a $4 billion valuation.
Yiftach Shoolman is the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Redis, Inc. Shoolman architected the Redis Enterprise clustering platform, developing patented Active-Active geo-distribution with Conflict-Free Replicated Data Types (CRDTs) that allowed Redis to run seamlessly across multi-cloud environments.
