Databricks was founded in 2013 by a research team at the University of California, Berkeley's AMPLab (Algorithms, Machines, and People Lab). In 2009, PhD student Matei Zaharia and professors Ali Ghodsi, Ion Stoica, and Scott Shenker recognized that the existing big data standard—Apache Hadoop and MapReduce—was too slow, disk-bound, and complex for iterative machine learning algorithms. In response, Zaharia designed Apache Spark, an open-source, memory-centric distributed computing framework that processed data up to 100 times faster than Hadoop. After Spark became the most active open-source big data project in the world, the research team—including Ghodsi, Zaharia, Reynold Xin, Patrick Wendell, Andy Konwinski, and Arsalan Tavakoli-Shiraji—incorporated Databricks to build a fully managed cloud commercialization platform. The company subsequently invented the Lakehouse architecture, Delta Lake, and MLflow, transforming from a managed Spark provider into an enterprise data and AI giant.
Ali Ghodsi is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Databricks, Inc. At Databricks, Zaharia directs long-term research and software architecture. Reynold Xin is a co-founder and Chief Architect at Databricks. Patrick Wendell is a co-founder and Vice President of Engineering at Databricks.
