Founding Story
Perplexity was incorporated on August 22, 2022. Aravind Srinivas, a UC Berkeley PhD who had worked at OpenAI, founded it with Denis Yarats (ex-Meta AI Research), Johnny Ho (ex-Quora) and Andy Konwinski (a Databricks co-founder). An early demo, Bird SQL, let users search Twitter data in plain English. The team then launched a general web answer engine in December 2022. The first version passed top search results to a large language model and returned a summary with citations.
