Company History
Founded 2022 in San Francisco, California, United States
Perplexity AI was founded in August 2022 in San Francisco by Aravind Srinivas, Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho, and Andy Konwinski. Srinivas, who had completed his PhD in computer science at UC Berkeley under Pieter Abbeel and worked as a research scientist at OpenAI and DeepMind, recognized that large language models could fundamentally solve the information overload of the modern web. However, early LLMs suffered from hallucinations and lacked access to real-time information. Together with Denis Yarats (a Meta AI research scientist and NYU PhD under Yann LeCun), Johnny Ho (a former top competitive programmer and Quora engineer), and Andy Konwinski (a co-founder of Databricks), the team built Bird SQL—a tool allowing users to query Twitter's database using natural language. Seeing the immense demand for natural language data discovery, they pivoted to build a general web answer engine, launching Perplexity Ask in December 2022. The product went viral within days, as academics, engineers, and researchers discovered an AI engine that cited its sources with academic rigor. In late 2022, operating out of a small office in San Francisco, Aravind Srinivas, Denis Yarats, and Johnny Ho engaged in an intense technical sprint to solve the hallucination problem that plagued early LLMs. By coupling an open-source language model with live web retrieval APIs and enforcing a strict rule that every factual assertion must be attributed to an indexed web URL, they created the prototype for Perplexity Ask. When the tool was shared organically on Twitter, researchers, academics, and venture capitalists immediately recognized that the era of navigating ten blue links was officially over.
Aravind Srinivas is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Perplexity AI, Inc. Prior to founding Perplexity, Srinivas completed research internships at DeepMind and Google Brain, before joining OpenAI as a research scientist in 2021, where he worked on language and diffusion models. Recognizing that the transformative power of generative AI could be combined with real-time web retrieval to replace Google's twenty-year search monopoly, Srinivas left OpenAI to establish Perplexity in 2022. Under his leadership as CEO, Perplexity scaled into a $9.0 billion answer engine titan serving millions of daily active users, securing investments from Jeff Bezos, NVIDIA, and SoftBank, and emerging as the defining challenger to traditional web search.
Denis Yarats is the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Perplexity AI. Before co-founding Perplexity, Yarats served as a research scientist at Meta AI (FAIR), where he published influential research on reinforcement learning sample efficiency, and worked as a software engineer at Quora and Microsoft. At Perplexity, Yarats architects the core retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) infrastructure, distributed search index pipelines, and Sonar foundation model training loops, ensuring that millions of daily queries receive real-time, factually verified answers with sub-second latency. At Perplexity, Yarats leads a world-class engineering organization that bridges frontier machine learning research with distributed systems software. He pioneered the integration of live web indexing directly into transformer context windows, achieving sub-second latency that transformed conversational search from an academic novelty into a daily consumer habit for millions of global users. His research on reinforcement learning sample efficiency continues to guide Perplexity's autonomous model training algorithms.
Johnny Ho is a co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer at Perplexity AI. Prior to co-founding Perplexity, Ho worked as a quantitative software engineer at Tower Research Capital and served as an engineer at Quora. At Perplexity, Ho directs product engineering, core ranking algorithms, algorithmic latency optimization, and strategic commercial initiatives, ensuring that Perplexity's interactive features (such as Pro Search and Pages) deliver world-class execution. At Perplexity, Ho manages the delicate interplay between complex multi-step reasoning algorithms and end-user latency. Drawing upon his competitive programming mastery, Ho engineered the algorithmic pipelines for Pro Search, enabling the system to autonomously break down ambiguous user queries into targeted sub-searches, parallelize web document retrieval, and assemble comprehensive research guides in real time.
Andy Konwinski is a co-founder of Perplexity AI and co-founder of Databricks. A seasoned distributed systems architect and venture investor, Konwinski provided foundational incubation capital, distributed infrastructure expertise, and enterprise governance. At Perplexity, Konwinski guides enterprise go-to-market strategy, infrastructure partnerships, and board-level strategy, helping the founding academic team navigate the commercial challenges of hyper-growth scaling. Konwinski's strategic guidance proved indispensable during Perplexity's critical transition from early consumer experimentation to a multi-billion-dollar enterprise platform. Drawing on his experience scaling Databricks from an academic lab into an enterprise software giant, Konwinski helped architect Perplexity's institutional fundraising rounds, guided executive talent recruitment, and structured early enterprise cloud infrastructure agreements that ensured high availability during periods of exponential user growth.
