Perplexity is growing on three fronts: (1) agent products such as Comet and Computer that carry usage-based pricing; (2) distribution through carriers, PC makers and bundles, including the HP preload announced September 15, 2026; and (3) enterprise seats with internal-file search. It is also securing more compute and model access, through the January 2026 Microsoft Azure agreement and the Crusoe GB300 capacity deal.
Perplexity makes money mainly from subscriptions. The free tier is limited. Pro ($20 a month) and Max (a higher tier that includes the Comet browser's advanced features) add more queries and access to frontier models. Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max are sold per seat to companies and add security controls and search over internal files. Developers pay by usage for the Sonar API. Since February 2026 the Computer agent has added usage-based charges on top of subscriptions. Distribution deals with telecom carriers, device makers such as HP, and payment partners bring in users through bundled plans. Perplexity has also tested ads and run revenue-sharing programs for publishers.
Perplexity has made no large disclosed acquisitions. It has grown through in-house products and partnerships.
In August 2025 Perplexity made an unsolicited $34.5 billion offer for Chrome, in case a U.S. antitrust ruling forced Google to sell it. Google did not sell.
A three-year Microsoft Azure model-access deal (January 2026), a Crusoe GB300 compute deal and an HP PC preload (both September 2026), carrier bundles such as SoftBank, and publisher revenue-sharing programs.
Perplexity has prioritized strategic talent acquisitions ("acqui-hires") in web crawling, distributed systems indexing, and conversational UI engineering, absorbing specialized startup founders from search and vector database disciplines.
To resolve copyright disputes and content scraping controversies, Perplexity launched an innovative revenue-sharing program with media giants (including Time, Der Spiegel, Fortune, and Texas Tribune), paying publishers double-digit percentage royalties whenever their articles are cited in monetized answers.
During US antitrust proceedings involving Google's search monopoly and potential remedies regarding the divestiture of Chrome, Perplexity signaled willingness to partner or acquire browser distribution assets, highlighting the crucial importance of default search placement.
Perplexity executed landmark distribution deals with telecom giants like SoftBank, Deutsche Telekom, and SK Telecom, offering complimentary 1-year Perplexity Pro subscriptions to tens of millions of subscribers and pre-installing the answer engine on consumer devices.
Perplexity operates a hybrid architecture: combining proprietary real-time web crawlers (PerplexityBot) and specialized indexing pipelines with third-party search APIs, ensuring up-to-the-minute freshness without maintaining multi-billion-dollar web-crawling server farms.
