The concept of MercadoLibre was conceived in 1999 by Marcos Galperin while completing his MBA at Stanford Graduate School of Business. Observing the meteoric rise of eBay in the United States, Galperin recognized that Latin American consumers faced even greater retail friction—antiquated banking systems, rampant retail fraud, lack of consumer credit, and virtually non-existent logistics infrastructure. While at Stanford, Galperin pitched his business plan to legendary investor John Muse of HM Capital, who offered to drive him to the airport. During the 40-minute car ride, Galperin gave the pitch of his life, securing a $7.6 million initial investment commitment before boarding his flight. Returning to Buenos Aires, Galperin and co-founder Hernan Kazah set up operations in the damp garage of Galperin's family leather tannery, launching MercadoLibre on August 2, 1999, and expanding into Brazil, Mexico, and Uruguay within months.
