Cohere was founded in Toronto in 2019 by Aidan Gomez, Nick Frosst, and Ivan Zhang. In 2017, while interning at Google Brain in Mountain View at just twenty years of age, Aidan Gomez co-authored the revolutionary research paper 'Attention Is All You Need' alongside Ashish Vaswani, Noam Shazeer, and Lukasz Kaiser. That single paper introduced the Transformer architecture—the foundational breakthrough that made modern large language models, including GPT-4, Claude, and Gemini, possible. Recognizing that tech giants were focusing their transformer research on proprietary consumer apps and advertising algorithms, Gomez returned to Toronto and teamed up with Nick Frosst (who conducted deep neural network research under Turing Award winner Geoffrey Hinton at Google Brain Toronto) and Ivan Zhang. Ivan Zhang is a co-founder of Cohere.
