Company History
Founded 2019 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Cohere was founded in Toronto in 2019 by Aidan Gomez, Nick Frosst, and Ivan Zhang. In 2017, while interning at Google Brain in Mountain View at just twenty years of age, Aidan Gomez co-authored the revolutionary research paper 'Attention Is All You Need' alongside Ashish Vaswani, Noam Shazeer, and Lukasz Kaiser. That single paper introduced the Transformer architecture—the foundational breakthrough that made modern large language models, including GPT-4, Claude, and Gemini, possible. Recognizing that tech giants were focusing their transformer research on proprietary consumer apps and advertising algorithms, Gomez returned to Toronto and teamed up with Nick Frosst (who conducted deep neural network research under Turing Award winner Geoffrey Hinton at Google Brain Toronto) and Ivan Zhang. Together, they founded Cohere to build an independent, enterprise-focused AI laboratory that gave every company in the world access to transformative language technology without requiring them to surrender proprietary corporate data to Big Tech. In late 2019, working out of a shared incubator space in downtown Toronto near the University of Toronto campus, Aidan Gomez, Ivan Zhang, and Nick Frosst spent long nights debating the future of computing. Gomez, fresh from his breakthrough at Google Brain with the Transformer paper, realized that while Silicon Valley was obsessing over consumer social media, the entire global enterprise economy was struggling to organize its internal text data. By combining Gomez's foundational transformer mastery with Zhang's distributed systems architecture and Frosst's deep learning research, the three young Canadians incorporated Cohere, launching the modern era of private enterprise artificial intelligence.
Aidan Gomez is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Cohere, Inc. In 2017, while working at Google Brain at just twenty years of age, Gomez co-authored the seminal research paper 'Attention Is All You Need' alongside seven other researchers, introducing the Transformer architecture that became the foundational catalyst for modern generative artificial intelligence. In 2019, Gomez co-founded Cohere in Toronto to translate transformer research into secure, privacy-first software for global enterprises. As CEO, Gomez has raised over $900 million in institutional capital, secured strategic alliances with Oracle, AWS, and Fujitsu, and built Cohere into a $5.5 billion enterprise AI powerhouse generating over $50 million in annual revenue. Gomez's technical legacy is immortalized through his co-authorship of 'Attention Is All You Need', which formulated the self-attention equations that power the global AI revolution. At Cohere, Gomez directs long-term research vision, corporate capital formation, and strategic cloud alliances. A passionate advocate for responsible enterprise AI, Gomez frequently advises international policymakers, economic summits, and enterprise boards on sovereign AI infrastructure, data governance, and the commercialization of machine learning.
Ivan Zhang is a co-founder of Cohere. An exceptional systems architect, Zhang previously co-founded artificial intelligence consultancy FOR.ai alongside Aidan Gomez, conducting distributed machine learning research. At Cohere, Zhang leads distributed cloud infrastructure, backend API scalability, and datacenter operations, architecting the low-latency multi-cloud pipelines that allow Cohere's Command and Embed models to serve millions of daily corporate API calls across AWS, OCI, and Azure. At Cohere, Zhang leads a world-class distributed systems and infrastructure engineering team. He architected Cohere's multi-cloud serving fabric, developing custom low-latency inference runtimes that allow Command R+ and Embed v3 to execute across heterogeneous GPU hardware on AWS, Oracle Cloud, and private enterprise VPCs with 99.99% operational uptime. His systems engineering mastery ensures that Cohere delivers high throughput at industry-leading cost efficiency.
Nick Frosst is a co-founder of Cohere. At Google Brain, Frosst spent years working directly alongside Geoffrey Hinton, publishing influential research on capsule networks, neural interpretability, and adversarial robustness. At Cohere, Frosst directs fundamental research initiatives, language model safety, and semantic embedding algorithms, playing a key role in the creation of Cohere Embed and Rerank. He is also a celebrated indie rock musician and an outspoken advocate for grounded, responsible AI safety standards. At Google Brain's Toronto laboratory, Frosst worked as a direct protégé of Geoffrey Hinton, exploring fundamental questions in neural representations, adversarial robustness, and biological plausibility. At Cohere, Frosst directs fundamental capabilities research, semantic embedding algorithms, and AI alignment methodologies. His research was instrumental in the mathematical formulation of Cohere Embed v3 and Rerank 3, establishing them as the global standard for enterprise document retrieval.
