The legend of BYJU'S begins in Azhikode, a lush coastal village in Kannur, Kerala. Byju Raveendran, the son of two schoolteachers, was an exceptional athlete and student who studied mechanical engineering at Government Engineering College, Kannur. After graduating, Byju took a job as a service engineer for a multinational shipping firm in the UK. In 2003, while visiting friends in Bengaluru during a vacation, he helped several friends study for the CAT (the grueling entrance examination for the prestigious Indian Institutes of Management). For fun, Byju took the exam himself without preparation and scored in the 100th percentile. Two years later, he took it again and scored 100 percentile a second time. Realizing he had a natural gift for teaching shortcuts and intuitive problem-solving, Byju quit his corporate engineering job and began conducting weekend math workshops in a friend's terrace, charging ₹100 per student. Word spread like wildfire: classroom sizes grew from 40 to 1,000 students. Soon, Byju was renting indoor sports stadiums like the Kanteerava Stadium and Indira Gandhi Arena, teaching 25,000 students simultaneously while traveling across nine cities every week. In 2011, joined by his top student Divya Gokulnath and a passionate cohort of early pupils, Byju incorporated Think and Learn Private Limited in Bengaluru. Recognizing that physical stadiums could never scale to reach India's 250 million school children, Byju hired hundreds of animators and software engineers to create the BYJU'S Learning App in 2015, sparking the modern Indian edtech revolution.
BYJU'S was founded in 2011 by Byju Raveendran, Divya Gokulnath in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India.
