Background
Byju Raveendran was born in Azhikode, a small coastal village in Kerala, India. His parents were school teachers, but he was a reluctant student, preferring sports over formal education. He earned a B.Tech in mechanical engineering from a government college and began working as a service engineer for a multinational shipping firm. His natural aptitude for mathematics became apparent when he casually helped friends prepare for the highly competitive CAT (Common Admission Test) for Indian Institutes of Management, eventually taking the exam himself and scoring in the 100th percentile twice without formal preparation.
Founding Story
Byju Raveendran founded BYJU'S (originally Think and Learn Pvt Ltd) in 2011, transforming his large, stadium-sized offline math tutoring classes into a digital education empire. Recognizing the limitations of physical classrooms, he spearheaded the launch of the BYJU'S Learning App in 2015, which transformed Indian education through highly engaging, animated, and personalized video lessons. His vision was to make learning contextual and visual rather than rote. Raveendran's aggressive growth strategy attracted billions in venture capital from heavyweights like Sequoia, Tencent, and Mark Zuckerberg's Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. He used this capital to execute a large acquisition spree, buying up companies like Aakash Educational Services, Epic, and WhiteHat Jr to consolidate the global EdTech market. While celebrated as India's premier startup success story, his hyper-aggressive sales tactics, large debt, and rapid global expansion eventually led to severe financial distress and corporate governance crises in recent years.
