Founding Story
Elon Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 as an open-source non-profit dedicated to safe artificial intelligence. Over subsequent years, Musk grew increasingly dissatisfied with OpenAI's commercial restructuring and ideological guardrails, warning that closed commercial models risked compromising foundational transparency. In July 2023, Musk formally announced the creation of xAI with an audacious corporate mandate: 'to understand the true nature of the universe'.
