Founding Story

Vanguard was founded in 1975 by John C. Bogle after he was fired as the head of Wellington Management due to a botched merger. Stripped of his ability to manage active funds, Bogle exploited a loophole to create a new, 'passive' subsidiary named Vanguard (after Lord Nelson's flagship). He established a revolutionary mutual structure where the funds themselves owned the company, ensuring profits were returned to investors as lower fees. In 1976, Vanguard launched the First Index Investment Trust, the world's first index fund available to retail investors.
