- How did Synchrony Bank start?
- Synchrony traces its origins to 1932 during the Great Depression, when General Electric founded GE Contracts Corporation to finance home appliance purchases for American families.
Founding Story
The foundational heritage of Synchrony began in 1932 in the darkest depths of the Great Depression. As American household incomes collapsed, General Electric manufactured innovative electric refrigerators, washing machines, and radios, but ordinary consumers lacked the cash to buy them. In response, GE formed the GE Contracts Corporation to provide consumer installment credit directly at the retail point-of-sale, allowing families to purchase modern electric appliances for a few dollars a month. Over the post-WWII economic boom, the division expanded beyond GE appliances, partnering with department stores, furniture retailers, and regional merchants to create private-label store charge cards. In 1987, it created CareCredit, pioneering medical installment financing for dental, veterinary, and vision procedures. By the 2000s, operating as GE Capital Retail Finance, the company was the dominant credit card partner for major American retailers. In 2014, to comply with post-crisis Federal Reserve capital rules and simplify its corporate conglomerate structure, General Electric executed an initial public offering of Synchrony Financial on the New York Stock Exchange, fully divesting its remaining 84.6% stake via a share exchange in late 2015. Free from GE's corporate oversight, Synchrony modernized its digital cloud infrastructure, forged premier e-commerce partnerships with Amazon and PayPal, and scaled Synchrony Bank into a top-tier digital deposit franchise.
