Founded in 1985 by Dan Gilbert, Gary Gilbert, Ron Berman, and Lindsay Gross, the company originated as a local Michigan mortgage brokerage. After a brief acquisition by Intuit in 1999 that birthed the Quicken Loans brand, Dan Gilbert bought the firm back in 2002. In 2010, Gilbert relocated headquarters to downtown Detroit, anchoring a historic commercial and civic revitalization. In 2020, Rocket Companies completed an IPO on the NYSE, raising $1.8 billion.
Rocket operates a scalable digital non-bank lending and servicing model. It generates revenue by originating residential mortgages through direct-to-consumer digital channels and wholesale broker partners, packaging and selling those loans into the secondary market for cash gain-on-sale margins (60%), collecting ongoing fees on its multi-hundred-billion-dollar mortgage servicing rights (MSR) portfolio (28%), and monetizing consumer subscriptions and ancillary title fees via Rocket Money and Amrock (12%).
