Polestar originated in 1996 as 'Flash Engineering,' a highly successful Swedish racing team specifically modifying Volvo cars for the Swedish Touring Car Championship. It was later rebranded as Polestar Racing by Christian Dahl. For over a decade, it operated as Volvo's official performance tuning partner (similar to Mercedes-AMG). Recognizing the massive impending shift to electric vehicles, Volvo (now owned by the massive Chinese conglomerate Geely) aggressively acquired the tuning division in 2015. In 2017, Geely and Volvo executed a massive strategic pivot, completely spinning Polestar off into a standalone, highly premium, all-electric automotive brand designed specifically to battle Tesla directly.
