2020
Acquired the Amsterdam-based maker of the AppScooter for its design and engineering team.
Its scooter design became the basis of the Ola S1.
Integrated into Ola Electric's vehicle R&D.
Ola Electric's growth plan has four parts: win back scooter share with cheaper S1 variants and its own cells; build Roadster electric motorcycles into a second vehicle business; use the gigafactory to supply cells for both vehicles and stationary storage; and cut operating costs toward ~$34.8 million (₹300 crore) a quarter so that recovering volume reaches EBITDA breakeven.
Ola Electric makes money mainly by selling electric scooters (S1 range) and Roadster electric motorcycles directly to consumers through its own app and company-owned stores, without franchised dealers. The automotive segment generated all ~$52.8 million (₹455 crore) of Q1 FY27 operating revenue. A second segment, the cell business, manufactures 4680 NMC and 46100 LFP lithium-ion cells for Ola's own vehicles and for its Mahashakti energy storage platform; it recorded just ~$580,000 (₹5 crore) of revenue in Q1 FY27. Smaller income comes from spare parts, service, extended warranties and paid MoveOS software features, and the company accrues incentives under India's auto and battery PLI schemes.
Ola Electric's notable acquisition is Etergo BV, an Amsterdam-based electric scooter startup bought in 2020. Its AppScooter design became the basis of the Ola S1. Terms were not officially disclosed.
Following the Etergo acquisition, Ola Electric shifted its strategy primarily to in-house proprietary R&D at its Battery Innovation Centre and vehicle design studios, building core technologies internally to maximize intellectual property ownership.
In May 2020, Ola Electric acquired Amsterdam-based electric scooter startup Etergo BV for approximately $200 million. Etergo had engineered the award-winning "AppScooter," featuring a sleek aerodynamic body and swappable battery design that served as the foundational platform for the Ola S1 Pro.
While Etergo designed its scooter for smooth European pavements and mild climates, Ola Electric replaced the complex swappable banana-shaped batteries with a fixed high-capacity pack, upgraded suspension components for rugged Indian roads, and added thermal cooling algorithms for 45°C ambient temperatures.
Ola Electric acquired battery patents and engineering talent through strategic minority investments and technology collaborations with global battery research labs, enabling the design of its proprietary 2170 and 4680 cylindrical cell architectures.
Following the foundational Etergo acquisition, Ola Electric shifted almost exclusively to in-house engineering and organic development, building proprietary motors, electronic control units (ECUs), battery management systems (BMS), and software.
Ola Electric leveraged ANI Technologies' acquisition of GeoSpoc (geospatial mapping) to build Ola Maps into its dashboard OS, while developing its Hypercharger hardware and fast-charging network completely in-house.
Ola Electric selectively explores strategic acquisitions in raw material supply chains, cathode chemistry synthesis, and autonomous vision software to protect its long-term battery Gigafactory production margins.
