Marvell Technology possesses a brilliant, intensely entrepreneurial, and controversial founding story, rooted in the intellectual horsepower of UC Berkeley and driven by one of the most successful immigrant couples in Silicon Valley history. The company was founded in 1995 in Santa Clara, California, by Sehat Sutardja, his wife Weili Dai, and his brother Pantas Sutardja. Sehat and Pantas were brilliant Indonesian immigrants, while Weili Dai was a driven immigrant from Shanghai, China. They met while studying electrical engineering and computer science at the prestigious UC Berkeley. They possessed a technical 'eureka' moment regarding data storage. At the time, hard drives were constrained by slow data transfer speeds. Sehat Sutardja, a genius in complex analog-mixed-signal (AMS) circuit design, recognized that by heavily utilizing advanced CMOS technology, he could integrate amounts of complex processing power onto a single, tiny chip. Their foundational masterstroke was dominating this difficult 'mixed-signal' niche. While competitors like Broadcom struggled, Marvell produced the fastest, most reliable read-channel chips for hard drives, securing contracts with Seagate and Western Digital. Under Weili Dai's aggressive, charismatic sales leadership, Marvell exploded into a multi-billion dollar semiconductor titan. However, their celebrated tenure ended in controversy in 2016 following an internal accounting investigation, leading to their abrupt resignation. Despite this controversial exit, the engineering foundation the Sutardjas built entirely established the advanced technical architecture of the modern company.
