Hapag-Lloyd AG is Germany's largest container shipping company and the world's fifth-largest liner carrier by fleet capacity. Headquartered at Ballindamm in Hamburg and listed in Frankfurt (ticker HLAG), it moved 13.5 million TEU in 2025 with 18,117 employees, 301 ships and a network of terminals in Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia. Roughly 96% of its shares are held by five anchor investors, so the free float is small. The company is headquartered in Hamburg, Germany.
Hapag-Lloyd earns money by selling space on its container network. Shippers and freight forwarders pay freight rates per container (measured in TEU) under annual or multi-month contracts and on the spot market, plus surcharges for bunker fuel, emissions costs and equipment. Liner Shipping produced about 98% of FY2025 revenue; the Terminal and Infrastructure segment, built largely from the 2023 SM SAAM terminal deal and other port stakes, contributed roughly $514 million. Since February 2025 most East-West capacity is deployed through the Gemini Cooperation with Maersk, a vessel-sharing arrangement that lets both carriers run a hub-and-spoke network without each owning every ship on every loop.
