The company was founded in 2013 by four Stanford students: Tony Xu, Stanley Tang, Andy Fang, and Evan Moore.
They didn't start with food delivery. They were interviewing small business owners in Palo Alto to build software for them. A macaroon store owner complained she had to decline massive catering orders because she didn't have delivery drivers. The founders instantly realized logistics was the real problem.
The famous 'PaloAltoDelivery.com' experiment. They didn't write massive code. They simply uploaded PDF menus of local restaurants to a basic webpage with Tony Xu's personal cell phone number at the top. When the phone rang, they skipped class to deliver the food.
Y Combinator. The massive, highly prestigious startup accelerator gave them $120,000 in seed funding. Paul Graham (founder of YC) famously told them to focus absolutely entirely on making the first 100 customers incredibly happy, rather than worrying about scaling globally.
Evan Moore, one of the original four, left the company highly amicably in 2014, very shortly after they graduated from Y Combinator. He went on to become a highly successful venture capitalist at Khosla Ventures, while the other three founders took DoorDash public.
