Company History
Founded 2019 in San Francisco, California, United States
Deel was founded in 2019 by Alex Bouaziz and Shuo Wang, who met while studying advanced engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Bouaziz was from Paris and had studied civil and environmental engineering; Wang was from China and had studied mechanical engineering and robotics. After graduating, both founded separate technology startups and faced the exact same exhausting bottleneck: they wanted to hire brilliant engineers in Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Asia, but the legal and regulatory hurdles were paralyzing. Incorporating a foreign subsidiary required months of bureaucratic red tape, local banking licenses, and tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees. Recognizing that the global talent pool was borderless while legal frameworks remained fiercely local, they entered Y Combinator's Winter 2019 batch to build software that automated international contractor contracts and payments. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in early 2020, forcing companies worldwide to hire remote workers across borders, Deel's platform exploded into an indispensable global utility, kickstarting one of the most meteoric growth trajectories in SaaS history. In 2018, inside a lab at MIT, Alex Bouaziz was exhausted. Having founded an early tech startup, he found an incredible software engineer in Israel and a gifted designer in London. But when he tried to hire them, he hit a wall of international legal bureaucracy: foreign labor codes, international tax treaties, and foreign currency wires. Lawyers told him it would take $30,000 and six months of paperwork just to open a foreign subsidiary. Bouaziz walked over to his classmate Shuo Wang, a brilliant roboticist, and said: 'We need to fix this for the world.' They entered Y Combinator in 2019, and Bouaziz personally traveled the world incorporating legal entities country by country. When the 2020 remote work boom exploded, Deel was the only platform ready to power global hiring, igniting the fastest software ascent in corporate history.
Alex Bouaziz is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Deel, Inc. While attempting to hire international software engineers for an early startup, Bouaziz spent months battling foreign labor bureaucracies and tax forms, realizing that cross-border hiring was completely broken. In 2019, alongside MIT classmate Shuo Wang, Bouaziz founded Deel to make hiring anywhere on Earth as simple as sending an email. Under Bouaziz's relentlessly energetic, customer-obsessed leadership, Deel achieved the fastest revenue growth in enterprise software history—scaling from $1M to $100M ARR in under twenty months, crossing $500M ARR with sustained profitability at a $12.0 billion valuation. Bouaziz is universally recognized as the visionary leader of the global remote work revolution. Bouaziz's relentless energy, customer obsession, and global vision made him one of the most dynamic technology leaders of his generation. Operating without a physical office and traveling continuously across continents, Bouaziz steered Deel from an early YC concept into a $12.0 billion software giant generating over $500M ARR with sustained profitability, championing the democratic freedom of human beings to work from anywhere on Earth.
Shuo Wang is the co-founder and Chief Revenue Officer of Deel.
