How did Coles Group start?
Founded in 1914 by George James Coles in Collingwood, Melbourne with the motto "Nothing over a shilling", Coles grew into a foundational pillar of Australian retail.

Founding Story

The origins of Coles began on April 9, 1914, in a working-class suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, when 28-year-old George James (G.J.) Coles opened the 'Coles Variety Store' on Smith Street, Collingwood. Having studied American discount five-and-dime stores, G.J. Coles posted a large banner across his shopfront declaring: 'Nothing Over 1 Shilling.' The shop was an instantaneous success, packed with Melbourne shoppers looking for affordable household goods and confectionery. In 1921, G.J. Coles was joined by his brothers Jim and Arthur, incorporating G.J. Coles & Coy Limited. The company listed on the Melbourne Stock Exchange in 1927. In 1960, recognizing the rise of the automobile and suburban housing developments, Coles opened Australia's first true American-style freestanding supermarket in North Balwyn, Melbourne, featuring 32 cash registers and 800 parking spaces. In 1985, Coles merged with the Myer Emporium department store chain to form Coles Myer Limited. In 2007, Western Australian conglomerate Wesfarmers acquired Coles Group for AUD $19.3 billion, leading a massive operational turnaround. In November 2018, Wesfarmers successfully demerged Coles Group as an independent ASX-listed public corporation, freeing the retailer to focus exclusively on grocery, liquor, automated supply chains, and digital retail. In the decades following its initial founding, Coles Group navigated rapid industry evolutions, transitioning from early legacy operating paradigms to modern integrated operations. This sustained focus allowed the company to survive cyclical macroeconomic contractions, outpace regional incumbents, and establish deep institutional trust with demanding stakeholders. Through disciplined capital allocation, continuous internal innovation, and targeted strategic initiatives, Coles Group built an enduring competitive moat anchored by proprietary technology, deep domain expertise, and sticky relationships that resist structural disruption.
