Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce was formed on June 1, 1961 through the monumental merger of The Canadian Bank of Commerce (founded in 1867 by Senator William McMaster) and the Imperial Bank of Canada (founded in 1875 by Henry Stark Howland). The amalgamation united 1,200 branches across the country, creating Canada's largest bank at the time and establishing a cornerstone of national financial infrastructure. Over the subsequent six decades, CIBC pioneered consumer banking innovations—including Canada's first 24-hour automated cash dispenser in 1969 and direct PC banking in the 1990s—while executing pivotal strategic transactions such as the 1988 acquisition of Wood Gundy and the 2017 buyout of PrivateBancorp. Today, operating from its landmark headquarters at CIBC Square in Toronto, CIBC stands as a North American financial pillar managing over C$1.02 trillion in total balance sheet assets.
CIBC operates a diversified universal banking model anchored by four strategic operating groups: Canadian Personal & Business Banking (44.0% of revenues), Capital Markets & Direct Financial Services (21.0%), Canadian Wealth Management (18.0%), and U.S. Commercial Banking & Wealth Management (17.0%). It earns net interest income from residential mortgages and commercial lending, alongside non-interest fees from wealth management, loan syndication, trading, and merchant card services.
