Founded on November 3, 1817 by John Richardson and a visionary merchant syndicate, Bank of Montreal is Canada's first and oldest financial institution. Operating continuously for more than two centuries, BMO evolved from issuing the nation's first paper currency to financing the transcontinental Canadian Pacific Railway and pioneering Canadian cross-border expansion into the United States via Harris Bank and Bank of the West.
BMO operates across four core operating groups: Canadian Personal and Commercial Banking (35% of revenues), U.S. Personal and Commercial Banking (30%), BMO Capital Markets (20%), and BMO Wealth Management (15%). It generates earnings through net interest margin spreads on commercial, corporate, and residential loans, complemented by recurring fee income from investment banking underwriting, M&A advisory, private wealth management, and market-leading Canadian ETF issuance.

BMO navigates elevated credit loss provisions in U.S. commercial lending following the Bank of the West integration amidst higher interest rates, ongoing digestion of systems conversion expenses, and potential borrowing headwinds from Canadian residential mortgage refinancing cycles.
Darryl White has served as Chief Executive Officer of BMO Financial Group since November 1, 2017, succeeding William Downe. White joined BMO in 1994 as an investment banker and rose through the ranks to become CEO of BMO Capital Markets and Chief Operating Officer before his appointment to the top executive role.
Darryl White's defining achievement as CEO was negotiating and completing the US$16.3 billion all-cash acquisition of Bank of the West from BNP Paribas in 2021-2023. The transaction represented the largest M&A buyout in Canadian corporate history, dramatically expanding BMO's presence into California and establishing it as a top-15 commercial bank in the United States.
William Downe served as BMO's Chief Executive Officer from 2007 to 2017. He successfully navigated the 2008 global financial crisis without government bailouts, capitalized on distressed U.S. banking valuations by acquiring Marshall & Ilsley (M&I) for US$4.1 billion in 2011, and expanded commercial equipment financing by acquiring GE Capital's transportation portfolio in 2015.
Matthew Barrett served as CEO from 1989 to 1999, modernizing BMO into an international financial institution and listing its shares on the New York Stock Exchange in 1994. In 1998, Barrett proposed a historic CAD $40 billion mega-merger between BMO and Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), though the merger was ultimately blocked by the Canadian federal government on competition grounds.
BMO's leadership team operates with integrated North American group heads. Key executives include CEO Darryl White, CFO Tayfun Tuzun, Group Head of North American Personal & Business Banking Ernie Johannson, Group Head of BMO Wealth Management Deland Kamanga, and Alan Tencer leading BMO Capital Markets, providing unified cross-border oversight.
