How did CIBC start?
CIBC was formed through the historic June 1, 1961 merger of the Canadian Bank of Commerce (founded in 1867 by William McMaster) and the Imperial Bank of Canada (founded in 1875 by Henry Stark Howland)—creating the largest chartered bank merger in Canadian history at the time.

Founding Story

The foundations of CIBC trace back to Confederation-era Toronto in 1867, when prominent merchant and philanthropist William McMaster established The Canadian Bank of Commerce to finance burgeoning agricultural, timber, and mercantile trade across Upper Canada. Eight years later, in 1875, former Commerce vice-president Henry Stark Howland founded the Imperial Bank of Canada to pursue an aggressive commercial lending strategy. For 86 years, both chartered institutions operated as fierce rivals, expanding branch networks from coast to coast and financing transcontinental railways, mineral discoveries, and industrial expansion. On June 1, 1961, recognizing the need for unprecedented domestic scale in an increasingly globalized post-war economy, the two institutions merged to create CIBC, executing the largest corporate amalgamation in Canadian financial history.
