Founding Story

William Wallace Cargill founded the business in 1865 when he purchased a single wooden grain flat house on the newly opened McGregor & Western Railroad in Conover, Iowa. As railroads expanded across the American frontier, Cargill followed the tracks, building storage elevators at junctions and railheads across Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Dakotas. When William died in 1909, his son-in-law John H. MacMillan Sr. took over leadership, steering the company through financial restructuring and establishing the modern corporate governance structure that kept ownership concentrated within the family.
