In the late 1990s, after turning Amazon.com into the world's leading e-commerce retailer, Jeff Bezos reflected on a lifelong passion ignited in his youth: the exploration and settlement of space, inspired by the Apollo Moon landings and physicist Gerard K. O'Neill's vision of space colonies. On September 8, 2000, Bezos quietly incorporated Blue Origin in Kent, Washington. Rather than seeking quick publicity, Bezos operated Blue Origin in total secrecy for years, adopting the tortoise as the company mascot and the Latin motto 'Gradatim Ferociter' ('Step by step, ferociously'). Bezos recognized that the fundamental barrier preventing humanity from expanding into space was the astronomical cost of disposable rockets. Blue Origin set out to master vertical takeoff and vertical landing (VTVL) reusable propulsion. In November 2015, Blue Origin made aerospace history when its New Shepard rocket flew to space and performed the world's first successful vertical soft landing of a booster rocket on land.
