Founding Story

Antonio Swad, who had earlier founded the Pizza Patrón chain, opened the first Wingstop in Garland, Texas in 1994. The concept used a 1930s and 1940s aviation theme and a short menu of wings in several sauces, fries and sides. Franchising followed in the late 1990s. Swad sold the business to Gemini Investors in 2003, and Roark Capital bought it in 2010. Charlie Morrison became CEO in 2012 and took the company public on Nasdaq in June 2015. Wingstop then pushed hard into online ordering, and digital channels now account for roughly seven in ten sales.

Who Founded Wingstop? FAQ

Who founded Wingstop?

Wingstop was founded by American restaurant entrepreneur Antonio Swad in 1994 in Garland, Texas.

What was Antonio Swad's background before starting Wingstop?

Born to an Italian mother and Lebanese father, Swad grew up in Ohio and worked in restaurant kitchens from age 15 before moving to Texas and founding Pizza Patrón in 1986 to serve Hispanic communities.

What inspired the original Wingstop concept in 1994?

Swad noticed that Buffalo wings were only sold as tavern appetizers or sports bar side dishes; he designed a focused concept that elevated chicken wings into the star center-of-the-plate meal.

Why did Antonio Swad choose an aviation theme for the restaurants?

Swad loved 1930s and 1940s pre-jet aviation history, naming the brand 'Wingstop' and decorating stores with vintage airplane propellers, nostalgic green and white colors, and aviation memorabilia.

What was the founding operational rule that set Wingstop apart?

Swad insisted that chicken wings should never be kept under heat lamps; every single order had to be fried fresh and hand-tossed in signature sauce directly upon the customer's order.

When did Antonio Swad sell Wingstop?

In 2003, after expanding Wingstop to nearly 90 operating locations, Swad sold the company to private equity firm Gemini Investors to refocus his energies on expanding Pizza Patrón.

Did Antonio Swad retain any ownership in Wingstop following the sale?

Swad divested his equity in Wingstop in the 2003 transaction, later selling Pizza Patrón in 2016 and pursuing other private hospitality and culinary investments in Texas.

What is Antonio Swad's legacy in the American food industry?

Swad is celebrated as a visionary fast-casual pioneer who proved that a hyper-focused single-item menu (chicken wings) could scale into a multi-billion-dollar global restaurant enterprise.
