In August 1965, 17-year-old high school graduate Fred DeLuca needed money to pay for his college tuition to pursue his dream of becoming a medical doctor. At a family barbecue in Bridgeport, Connecticut, DeLuca asked family friend Dr. Peter Buck (a nuclear physicist) for advice. Dr. Buck proposed a simple business idea: open a submarine sandwich shop, handing DeLuca a check for $1,000 as a seed investment and becoming his 50/50 business partner. They rented a tiny storefront and opened 'Pete's Super Submarines' on August 28, 1965. On their first day, they sold 312 sandwiches. In 1968, they shortened the name to 'Subway' and adopted the now-iconic yellow-and-green arrow logo. Realizing that franchising could accelerate expansion without capital constraints, DeLuca and Buck began franchising in 1974, turning a $1,000 loan into the most ubiquitous restaurant chain on the planet.
