Company History
Founded 2009 in Santa Monica, California, United States
In 2009 in Venice Beach and Santa Monica, California, Justin Cooper, an art-loving digital producer, was trying to help a talented artist friend obtain an exhibition in a prestigious gallery in Los Angeles. The gallery circuit was notoriously closed, demanding high gallery commissions of 50% or more, while requiring thousands of dollars in advance framing costs that young working artists could never afford. Cooper reunited with his talented designer and developer friends Justin Brotherton and Lucas Kelly. Together, they asked a radical question: *'Why does an artist need permission from an art gallery owner to sell their work to people who love it?'* They launched Society6 as an invitation-only online community of elite digital painters, street artists, and illustrators. To solve the fatal problem of inventory risk, Cooper and Kelly built a software integration with high-end commercial digital textile and fine-art giclée printers. An artist uploaded a single digital file; a customer in Tokyo or London ordered a framed print or an iPhone case; the manufacturer printed, packaged, and shipped the item within 48 hours; and the artist received an automated cash royalty deposit without ever lifting a roll of packing tape. Word spread virally through the global creative arts community, turning Society6 into an international design sensation.
Since its establishment in 2009, Society6 expanded from an early-stage venture into a recognized leader in E-Commerce, Print-on-Demand Marketplace, Independent Artist Community & Home Decor, overcoming key market challenges.
Over its history, Society6 executed decisive strategic pivots toward scalable monetization and digital distribution, securing its current market leadership.
By continually modernizing operations and embracing workflow automation, Society6 maintains resilience through changing technological and economic cycles.
