Founding Story

In 1950 Spain had very few cars and no large car industry. The state holding company INI set up SEAT with Spanish banks and Fiat, opening a factory in Barcelona's Zona Franca in 1953. The SEAT 600, launched in 1957, became a symbol of Spain's economic growth. Fiat left in the early 1980s and Volkswagen bought the company from the state.

Founders

Instituto Nacional de Industria

The Instituto Nacional de Industria (INI) was the Spanish state industrial holding company. In May 1950 it founded SEAT together with a group of Spanish banks and Fiat, which supplied licences and technical know-how, to give post-war Spain its own mass-production car industry. INI held the controlling stake until it sold SEAT to Volkswagen between 1986 and 1990. (Exact birth year remains publicly undisclosed).
