Company History
Founded 2007 in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, India
The conceptual origin of Reliance Jio began around 2010 when Mukesh Ambani's daughter, Isha Ambani, was visiting home from Yale University and complained that the mobile internet in India was too slow and unreliable to submit simple university coursework. Recognizing that data would become the 'new oil' of the 21st-century global economy, Mukesh Ambani initiated a top-secret project codenamed 'Project Alpha'. In 2010, Reliance Industries acquired a 95% stake in Infotel Broadband Services Limited (IBSL)—the only company to win nationwide Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) spectrum in the 2.3 GHz band. While competitors dismissed the spectrum as unviable for voice calls, Ambani hired thousands of engineers, spent over $40 billion over six years, and laid over 250,000 kilometers of high-capacity optical fiber, building the world's first all-IP 4G LTE greenfield network from scratch.
Mukesh Ambani is the visionary founder and strategic architect of Reliance Jio. Anticipating that digital broadband would become the defining utility of the modern world, Ambani committed over $40 billion of Reliance capital to build an all-IP 4G network from the ground up. In September 2016, he launched Jio with free voice calling and ultra-cheap mobile data, triggering a revolution that brought half a billion Indians online and established India as the world's fastest-growing digital economy.
