How did Questrade start?
Questrade was founded in Toronto in 1999 by Edward Kholodenko alongside three partners, starting as a boutique technological brokerage during the dot-com boom.

Founding Story

In 1999, Edward Kholodenko, a driven Canadian entrepreneur who had previously managed international textile logistics in Eastern Europe, observed a glaring inefficiency in Canada's financial landscape: individual retail investors were treated as second-class citizens by the major chartered banks. Real-time stock execution was prohibitively expensive, and electronic trading infrastructure was reserved exclusively for institutional trading desks on Bay Street. Partnering with three technology and operational visionaries, Kholodenko founded Quest Capital Group on October 1, 1999. In its initial incarnation, Questrade operated an execution facility in Toronto where clients physically walked into an office to execute direct-access trades on leased computer terminals. Recognizing that web browser technology was rapidly maturing, Kholodenko rebranded the enterprise to Questrade in 2001 and launched an entirely web-based discount brokerage platform, setting the stage for a quarter-century of continuous fintech disruption.
