How did Nutanix start?
Founded in 2009 by Dheeraj Pandey, Mohit Aron, and Ajeet Singh in San Jose, Nutanix pioneered hyperconverged infrastructure, converging storage and compute onto commodity servers.

Founding Story

The concept of Nutanix was conceived in 2009 by Dheeraj Pandey (a former VP of engineering at Aster Data), Mohit Aron (lead Google File System architect), and Ajeet Singh. They recognized that while Google, Amazon, and Facebook operated massive, web-scale data centers built entirely from clustered commodity servers running intelligent distributed software, traditional enterprise IT was paralyzed by the complexity of traditional three-tier architectures. Enterprise data centers required separate servers from HP or Dell, Fibre Channel networking fabrics from Brocade or Cisco, and proprietary storage arrays from EMC or NetApp—each managed by siloed engineering teams with separate management consoles. The founders incorporated Nutanix in September 2009 in San Jose, California, raising $13.2 million in Series A funding from Lightspeed Venture Partners. The engineering team built the Nutanix Distributed Storage Fabric (DSF)—an intelligent distributed software layer that pools local flash storage across server nodes into a unified, resilient storage cluster with automated data tiering and self-healing. Nutanix launched its first commercial platform, Complete Cluster, in 2011, achieving immediate acclaim as the fastest-growing enterprise infrastructure startup of the decade. In September 2016, Nutanix completed its Initial Public Offering on the NASDAQ stock exchange (ticker: NTNX), raising $238 million. Between 2017 and 2020, Nutanix executed a monumental corporate transformation, completely eliminating hardware pass-through revenue to transition 100% of its business into high-margin software subscriptions. In December 2020, former VMware COO Rajiv Ramaswami was appointed Chief Executive Officer, steering the enterprise into GAAP profitability and massive hybrid cloud partnerships with Cisco and Dell.

Founders

Dheeraj Pandey

Dheeraj Pandey co-founded Nutanix in September 2009 and served as its Chief Executive Officer and Chairman for over eleven years, guiding the company from early incubation to its celebrated NASDAQ IPO in 2016. Pandey holds a Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and a Master of Science in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Austin, where he was a Ph.D. candidate. Before founding Nutanix, Pandey served as VP of Engineering at Aster Data Systems and was a Principal Engineer at Oracle Corporation, where he co-architected the storage and indexing engines of Oracle 9i and 10g. Under Pandey's visionary leadership, Nutanix invented hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI), disrupted the multibillion-dollar SAN/NAS storage industry, and pioneered enterprise hybrid cloud computing. Pandey stepped down as CEO in December 2020 and subsequently co-founded enterprise workflow platform DevRev.

Mohit Aron

Mohit Aron co-founded Nutanix in September 2009 and served as its Chief Technology Officer until 2013, architecting the company's core distributed software fabric and patent portfolio. Aron earned his Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science from IIT Delhi and obtained his Master's and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Rice University. Widely revered as the 'father of hyperconverged infrastructure,' Aron spent over four years as a Staff Software Engineer at Google, where he served as a primary systems architect for the Google File System (GFS)—the revolutionary storage foundation for Google Search and web-scale computing. After Google, Aron served as Lead Architect at Aster Data Systems before teaming up with Pandey and Singh to build Nutanix's Distributed Storage Fabric (DSF). In 2013, Aron founded Cohesity, a leader in AI-powered data management and cyber resilience.

Ajeet Singh

Ajeet Singh co-founded Nutanix in September 2009, serving as its early Chief Products Officer and head of product strategy, shaping the initial appliance design and go-to-market architecture. Singh earned a Bachelor of Technology in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and completed his MBA at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. Prior to Nutanix, Singh led product management at Aster Data Systems and held senior product management roles at Oracle Corporation, managing enterprise database replication and cache coherence products. Recognizing the potential for hyperconvergence to revolutionize enterprise IT, Singh drove Nutanix's earliest product specifications and channel strategies. In 2012, Singh departed to co-found ThoughtSpot, the pioneering search and AI-driven analytics company where he serves as Executive Chairman.
