Founding Story
In 1887, amidst the rapid industrialization of post-Confederation Canada, the country's manufacturing sector was expanding under Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald's National Policy tariffs. However, Canadian workers and industrial owners lacked strong domestic insurance providers that understood their unique economic realities, frequently relying on expensive British or American insurers. Visionary insurance executive J.B. Carlile conceptualized a dedicated domestic life insurance institution tailored to the nation's burgeoning industrial workforce. Carlile enlisted prominent political and commercial leaders, most notably Sir John A. Macdonald, Ontario Lieutenant-Governor Sir Alexander Campbell, and future Prime Minister Sir Mackenzie Bowell. On June 23, 1887, The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company was officially incorporated by an Act of Parliament, with Prime Minister Macdonald assuming the role of inaugural corporate president. Lending his immense stature and public trust to the enterprise, Macdonald helped establish immediate market credibility. From its initial office on Toronto's King Street, the young insurer distinguished itself by issuing Canada's first policies that covered occupational hazards common in industrial manufacturing, quickly expanding across Canadian provinces before boldly establishing international agencies in Asia and the Caribbean before the turn of the century.
