Company History
Founded 2019 in San Francisco, California, United States
In 2018, Karri Saarinen and Jori Lallo were reflecting on their experiences scaling product teams at Coinbase and Airbnb. They observed that as engineering organizations grew, they inevitably adopted Jira or similar enterprise software, which immediately slowed down execution velocity and introduced bureaucratic overhead. Developers spent hours filling out complex forms and waiting for web pages to load rather than writing code. Together with Tuomas Artman, an expert in distributed client architectures who had led mobile infrastructure at Uber, they decided to build an issue tracker that software teams would actually love. In early 2019, working out of San Francisco and Helsinki, they built the first prototype of Linear. Focusing obsessively on speed, they engineered a custom local-first architecture where every action executed instantaneously on the user's computer and synced asynchronously in the background. When they launched their private beta in mid-2019, demand went viral across Twitter and Hacker News, attracting thousands of tech companies within months.
Karri Saarinen is an internationally recognized Finnish designer, software engineer, and technology entrepreneur who serves as the co-founder and CEO of Linear. Prior to founding Linear in 2019, Saarinen was the Principal Designer at Airbnb, where he co-created the renowned Airbnb Design System that influenced digital design practices worldwide. Before Airbnb, he served as the founding designer at Coinbase, shaping the initial cryptocurrency trading interface, and co-founded Kippt, a Y Combinator-backed bookmarking and curation platform. At Linear, Saarinen has spearheaded product vision, user experience design, and company strategy, championing a return to software craft and high-velocity engineering.
Jori Lallo is a Finnish software engineer and serial technology entrepreneur who co-founded Linear in 2019. Lallo previously co-founded Kippt alongside Karri Saarinen, participating in Y Combinator's Summer 2012 batch. Following Kippt, Lallo joined Coinbase as an early engineering lead, architecting core frontend platforms and cryptocurrency wallet workflows during a period of explosive consumer hypergrowth. At Linear, Lallo leads product architecture, platform integrations, and developer ecosystem expansion, driving the integration of Git providers, Slack workflows, and enterprise collaboration features.
Tuomas Artman is a Finnish distributed systems architect and veteran software engineering leader who co-founded Linear in 2019. Before Linear, Artman served as a senior engineering lead and mobile architect at Uber, where he was responsible for architecting the core mobile frameworks and developer tooling that powered Uber's global rider and driver apps across hundreds of millions of devices. A recognized pioneer in client-side synchronization and reactive application architectures, Artman designed Linear's groundbreaking local-first sync engine that delivers instantaneous sub-50ms UI response times.
Since its establishment in 2019, Linear expanded from an early-stage venture into a recognized leader in Project Management, Issue Tracking, Developer Tools, Enterprise SaaS, Collaboration Software & Workflow Automation, overcoming key market challenges.
Over its history, Linear executed decisive strategic pivots toward scalable monetization and digital distribution, securing its current market leadership.
