Colonel Harland Sanders developed his Original Recipe of 11 herbs and spices at his roadside restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky in the 1930s and perfected the pressure-frying method that made KFC's chicken distinct. He began franchising the recipe in 1952 at age 62, personally driving from restaurant to restaurant to sign licensing deals before selling the company to John Y. Brown Jr. in 1964.
KFC's weak spot is the United States. Chick-fil-A, Popeyes and Raising Cane's have taken share in chicken sandwiches and tenders, and U.S. restaurants generated only about 13% of KFC's 2025 sales. Other pressures include chicken and cooking-oil costs, avian flu supply risk, price-sensitive diners pushing back on menu prices, keeping quality consistent across more than 33,000 franchised kitchens, and dependence on China, which accounts for roughly 27% of system sales.
