Company History
Founded 2000 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India
In 1999, the Government of India enacted the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) Act, opening the nation's state-monopolized insurance sector to private and foreign investment for the first time since nationalization in 1956. Recognizing an immense opportunity to modernize Indian financial security, Deepak Parekh—the legendary Chairman of Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC Ltd)—partnered with British insurance giant Standard Life Aberdeen plc. On October 23, 2000, HDFC Life became the very first private life insurer in India to receive registration certificate No. 101 from IRDAI. Commencing operations with a modest team in Mumbai, HDFC Life rejected the outdated, high-pressure door-to-door sales tactics of the state monopoly, pioneering professional actuarial training, transparent unit-linked insurance, and bancassurance partnerships that revolutionized Indian retail finance.
Deepak Parekh was the visionary architect and Founding Chairman of HDFC Life Insurance Company Limited. In 1999, recognizing the historic opening of India's insurance sector, Parekh forged a joint venture with Standard Life Aberdeen plc to create India's first private life insurer. Parekh's uncompromising insistence on corporate governance, actuarial integrity, and customer trust established HDFC Life as a beacon of financial stability in the Indian market. Parekh guided HDFC Life through two decades of exponential expansion, culminating in its 2017 public listing and the 2023 mega-merger uniting HDFC with HDFC Bank.
Standard Life Aberdeen plc was the founding foreign joint venture partner of HDFC Life in 2000. Standard Life contributed world-class actuarial science methodologies, risk underwriting frameworks, and international product development standards to the joint venture. Over a 23-year partnership, Standard Life supported HDFC Life's growth from a startup into an $18.0B financial powerhouse before completing a successful phased capital exit following HDFC Life's public listing.
